How to Install Minecraft Shaders

There are two main ways to install shaders on Minecraft Java Edition: using Iris (recommended) or OptiFine. Both methods are covered below.

Iris vs OptiFine

Iris (Recommended)

  • -Some OptiFine-only shaders not supported

OptiFine

  • +Supports all shader packs
  • +Built-in zoom and connected textures
  • +Long history and wide compatibility
  • -Lower performance than Iris + Sodium
  • -Limited mod compatibility

Install with Iris (Fabric)

Install Fabric Loader

Download and run the Fabric installer from fabricmc.net. Select your Minecraft version and click Install.

Download Iris + Sodium

Get the latest Iris Shaders mod from irisshaders.dev or modrinth.com/mod/iris. Iris comes bundled with Sodium for extra performance.

Place Iris in your mods folder

Move the downloaded .jar file into your .minecraft/mods/ folder. Create the folder if it does not exist.

Launch Minecraft with Fabric

Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the Fabric profile, and launch the game.

Add your shader pack

Go to Options > Video Settings > Shader Packs. Drag and drop your downloaded shader .zip file into the shader packs folder, or click 'Open Shader Pack Folder' to copy it manually.

Select and apply

Click on the shader pack in the list to select it, then click Apply. The shader will load and you can start playing.

Install with OptiFine

Download OptiFine

Go to optifine.net and download the version matching your Minecraft version. Choose the Ultra version for shader support.

Install OptiFine

Double-click the downloaded .jar file and click Install. This creates a new OptiFine profile in your launcher.

Launch Minecraft with OptiFine

Open the Minecraft Launcher, select the OptiFine profile, and launch the game.

Add your shader pack

Go to Options > Video Settings > Shaders. Click 'Shaders Folder' to open it, then place your shader .zip file inside.

Select and apply

Click on the shader pack in the list and click Done. The shader will activate immediately.

Tips for Best Performance

Allocate 4-8 GB of RAM to Minecraft in your launcher settings for shader packs.
Close other applications while playing with shaders to free up GPU resources.
Start with a lower quality preset and increase settings gradually.
Turn off shader features you do not need, like motion blur or depth of field.
Keep your GPU drivers updated for best shader compatibility.
If a shader pack has multiple profiles (Lite, Medium, High), start with Lite.
