Chocapic13's Shaders

by Chocapic13

A well-established shader pack with multiple performance tiers. Known for its clean, natural-looking lighting and solid all-around visual quality.

About Chocapic13's Shaders

A surprising share of the modern shader family tree starts at Chocapic13. Several well-known packs began life as edits of this codebase, which is why its lighting decisions feel familiar even to players who have never installed it. It is simultaneously a shader you can use and the base a generation of authors built on.

On its own terms it is quiet work. Volumetric lighting, godrays, reflections and fog, applied with restraint, over a colour palette that does not push saturation to make a point. Nothing announces itself. What you notice is that a build looks well photographed rather than transformed, which is a harder result to reach than a dramatic one.

Like Sildur's it ships in multiple performance tiers, so the stated GTX 960 with 2 GB of VRAM describes the middle of a range rather than a single figure. It covers Minecraft 1.7.10 up through 1.20.1 on either Iris or OptiFine. Updates arrive infrequently, which is the trade for a codebase this old, this stable and this widely forked.

Chocapic13's Shaders effects, shown

This effect list is the ancestor of several packs elsewhere on this site, which is why parts of it will feel familiar even on a first visit. Read it for restraint: the volumetric lighting, godrays and bloom are all applied below the level where they would announce themselves. The fog tile is worth a second look, since it is doing most of the work that makes landscape shots under this pack hold together.

Chocapic13's Shaders ships 8 headline effects. Every preview below shows one of Chocapic13's own screenshots behind the effect name rather than a crop cut from it. This pack publishes very few separate scenes of itself, and a single frame cannot honestly be sliced into a distinct close-up for each of 7 effects without implying we found something in it that is not there. So the tiles show the pack, and the sentence under each one tells you what that effect changes in the game.

Light shows in the air rather than only on surfaces, handled with the restraint that runs through the whole pack and through the packs built on top of it.

Shadows

Sun and moon each cast a real shadow, and the way Chocapic13 balances their softness is a decision several later shaders inherited wholesale.

Reflections

Water and polished blocks return the world above, kept natural in colour rather than tinted to match a house style.

Bloom

Bright sources glow into their surroundings without being pushed, which is why builds under this pack look photographed instead of retouched.

Custom sky

The sky is rebuilt with its own gradient and stars, matched to the naturalistic palette instead of introducing a colour of its own.

Waving vegetation

Every plant in the world picks up the same breeze, so a field moves as a single surface rather than as a thousand independent blocks.

Fog

Layered atmospheric fog puts distance between near terrain and far, and it is one of the reasons landscape shots under this pack hold together.

How Chocapic13's Shaders changes Minecraft

Chocapic13's changes the lighting rather than the blocks, and does it with a restraint that a good part of the modern shader scene inherited. Several of these decisions were later adopted wholesale by other authors:

  • Volumetric lighting: light shows in the air rather than only on surfaces, applied at a level that reads as natural rather than staged.
  • Shadows: sun and moon each cast a real shadow, and the softness balance struck here is one several later packs adopted wholesale.
  • Reflections: water and polished blocks return the world above them without a colour cast of their own, which suits the naturalistic palette.
  • Godrays: sun breaks into beams around terrain and foliage, applied lightly enough that a scene looks well lit rather than theatrically lit.
  • Bloom: bright sources glow into their surroundings without being pushed, which is why builds here look photographed instead of retouched.
  • Custom sky: the sky is rebuilt with its own gradient and star field, matched to the pack's naturalistic palette instead of adding a colour of its own.
  • Overall direction: clean, natural and quietly influential, the pack a surprising number of other shaders were built on top of.

How to install Chocapic13's Shaders

  1. 1Start with a loader: OptiFine, or Fabric with the Iris mod. Chocapic13's supports both loaders across an unusually wide range of Minecraft versions.
  2. 2Download the performance version you want from the link near the top of this page; like Sildur's, this pack comes as several separate files rather than one.
  3. 3Get into the game on your shader profile and take the Options route through Video Settings to the shader list.
  4. 4The button on that screen opens shaderpacks in a file manager. Drag the archive across and leave it packed.
  5. 5Select the Chocapic13's file you downloaded, press Apply or Done, and let it compile the first time it loads. Keep a note of which performance version you installed, since comparisons only mean something within the same one.

Like Sildur's, this comes in multiple performance versions, so check which file you are downloading. The middle profile matches the requirements listed on this page; the lighter and heavier ones sit either side of it, and comparing notes with someone running a different profile will only confuse both of you.

Chocapic13's Shaders performance notes

Chocapic13's Shaders sits in the medium-impact tier, and like Sildur's it ships in multiple performance profiles, so the real cost depends on which one you installed. The naturalistic look is cheap to produce, which is part of why so many other packs were built on this base.

It is written against a GTX 960 or RX 470 with 2 GB of graphics memory and 4 GB of system RAM. That figure describes the middle profile; the lighter ones will run below it and the heavier ones want more, which is worth checking before comparing benchmarks with anyone else.

Version coverage runs from Minecraft 1.7.10 up through 1.20.1 across Iris and OptiFine, covering nearly every release anyone still plays. Updates arrive infrequently, so a brand new Minecraft version may not have a matching release waiting for it.

Because the effects are applied with restraint, there is usually room to raise render distance rather than lower it, and the pack pairs well with an HD texture pack without falling out of a smooth frame rate on a mid-range card.

What to turn down first in Chocapic13's Shaders

Chocapic13 predates most of the packs on this site and its menu reflects that: fewer switches, each doing more.

  1. 1

Shadow resolution: the largest single saving, as on nearly everything derived from this pack.

  2. 2

Volumetric lighting: the second, and the one that changes the mood most when it goes.

  3. 3

Reflections: worth lowering on a coastal world and leaving alone anywhere else.

How many people run Chocapic13's Shaders?

The most downloaded of the seven packs on this site that never reached 1.21, and it is not close. A decade of being the base other packs were forked from leaves a long tail, even though the newest file is for 1.20.1.

Why Chocapic13's Shaders is not on the 1.21 shortlist

The newest file on the author's page is for 1.20.1, which is why it sits here rather than in the ranking above. It still matters on this page: a fair number of packs that do reach 1.21 began as forks of it, so if you liked Chocapic13's look, one of its descendants is probably the pack you want.

Somewhere to run Chocapic13's Shaders

Chocapic13's is stable under load, which is exactly what you want when a busy shared base is on screen: lots of entities, lots of light sources, and a frame rate that does not fall apart.

Chocapic13's runs on your own client and puts no load on the server at all. A busy shared base is heavy on your graphics card, never on the machine that hosts it.
